The magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi
'Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder.' Very true, unless you have laid your eyes on the princely Grand mosque of Abu Dhabi, because its not just an architectural wonder, but an epitome of royalty and beauty. One look at it and you will be spellbound. Without any doubt, any individual who visits this mosque, finds themselves fascinated and captivated. Such is the characteristic of this house of worship.
Intricately carved designs find its place on the pillars and domes that hold this giant structure reaching for the blue skies. Constructed in white marble, and dipped in gold, it looks like the flower bed of white tulips and daffodils adorning Mother Earth. The mosque reflects Islamic culture and its values, in its minarets, domes, walls, and ceilings, with verses from the Holy Quran carved on them with finesse.
The best time to visit this mosque is from the month of November to February, as rest of the months Sun will be too close to UAE.
The Grand mosque is open from Sat - Thurs. 9am - 10pm. It is closed on Friday morning for tourism(open only for worship), but is open again from 4.30pm -10pm(for tourism).
However, there are few things to be kept in mind before you make a visit.
1) Dress code for women - No shorts, mini skirts, revealing tops, dresses allowed. If you happen to come in such attire, you will be asked to hire the black gown, known as Abaya, worn by Muslim women, from their store. If you do not wish to wear it, you can come dresses in full length skirt, full sleeve top and a scarf to cover your head.
2) Dress code for men - No knee length or much shorter shorts allowed. You have to wear proper jeans/trousers and I guess shirts and t-shirts are allowed.
3) Basic Manners - Once inside the building/mosque, no PDA(Public display of affection) is allowed. Even holding hands of your partner is not much appreciated.
4) Photography - you can click as many pictures as you want from the areas limited for tourism. No hugging, holding hands, or any pouting of lips etc. and posing allowed inside the mosque.
5)Eatables - you can carry a bottle of water, but eatables are clearly not allowed inside the premises. Not even chewing gums.
